John comes from China and was raised in the beautiful coastal city of Tianjin where he obtained his MSc in Chemistry from Nankai University. He then moved to London to pursue a PhD at King’s College London, working under the supervision of Prof. Colin Reese. John explored the USA next, where he took up an NIH postdoctoral fellowship, working on DNA/RNA backbone modifications with Prof Marvin Caruthers at the University of Colorado. Returning to the UK, he moved to industry for some time to work as a senior scientist at Cruachem Ltd (Glasgow) before undertaking a variety of research fellowships across the UK. His most recent positions include research with Prof. David Hodgson at Durham University and Evonetix Ltd (Cambridge). Glasgow welcomed John back at the end of 2022 where he is now focusing on the ligation of RNA molecules in the Burley group.

In his spare time he likes sport, travel and cooking. John is a fond of this food place near the Ark… even though he has actually never been.
