Qualification:
Ryan grew up in the beautiful town of Ayr on the west coast of Scotland. He obtained his MChemin Chemistry with Drug Discovery in 2017 from the University of Strathclyde. His final year project focused on the synthesis of small molecule for the development of antimicrobial agents, under the supervision of Prof. Colin Suckling. Ryan initally moved to Huddersfield (England) for his PhD studies, researching antimicrobial minor groove binders with a focus on gram-negative bacterial infections and combatting common resistance mechanisms under the supervision of Dr. Fraser Scott and Prof. Colin Suckling. However, after two years in England, fate brought him back to Scotland as Fraser’s group moved to Strathclyde University. Since winter 2022, Ryan has joined the Burley group to work on the synthesis of isotopically labelled polyamides/DNA to further explore DNA binding through NMR and 2D-IR.

He loves playing golf, watching NFL, audiobooks/podcasts and Gregg’s. Ryan has two cats who seem to particularly enjoy the Burley literature meetings. Under the cap he wears most days, Ryan actually possesses an unexpectedly large amount of hair.
